Smith Rock Climbing Photo Gallery

Overview:
Smith Rock State Park is located near the town of Terrebonne in Central Oregon and is known as the birthplace of sport climbing in America. For years routes at Smith Rock were the hardest in the US and the world. By modern standards the routes here are no longer pushing the grades but many routes are still very challenging and it's impressive to think about how long ago many of these routes were done. Nowadays most visitors climb in the sub 5.11 range but you can still see tourists and locals alike putting ropes up on 5.13 and 5.14 routes througout the park.

Info:
Early spring and late fall are the best seasons to visit Smith Rock. There are days in the winter where it's too hot to climb in the sun but generally it is cold and verging on miserable to climb. That being said, if it's sunny it's climbable. In the summer it is usually too hot to climb unless you get up very early before the sun has touched the rock.

There are now two guide books to the area; the classic and well written Alan Watts guide and the new 'Select' guidebook from Jonathan Thesenga.

Be sure to check out the Terrebonne Depot for good grub and a nice cold beer.
